Today, Gary is recognised as one of the leading golf coaches in Europe.
Having started his professional career aged 20 as assistant Pro to Ryder Cup player, Norman Wood at Royal Guernsey Golf Club in 1987. He returned to his native Edinburgh to become assistant Pro at Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club in 1988, where he learned his trade over the next three years.
In 1991 he took up the post of Head Teaching Professional at Grazer Golf Club in Graz, Austria and spent the next two years there before being offered a similar position in Hamburg, Germany. After two years at Golf Club auf der Wendlohe in Hamburg, Gary was asked to work with fellow Scotsman, PGA European Tour Pro, Andrew Oldcorn as his full time coach.
So in 1995, he packed his suitcase to travel on Tour and has been doing so ever since, traveling far and wide, from Atlanta to Australia and St. Andrews to Singapore. Traveling to golf tournaments was nothing new to Gary since he had already been to a number of tournaments with his late father Alister Nicol, who was known throughout golfing circles the world over as a highly respected golf writer.
Once on Tour, his reputation as a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic golf coach soon spread and he has since worked with over 20 PGA European Tour Pros and gained a wealth of information, experience and knowledge along the way. Gary has also written a number of instruction articles, for golf.com and Today’s Golfer, Fore! and Bunkered magazines.
The following players won these tournaments under Gary tutelage:
Andrew Oldcorn - 3 time Winner on Tour, including 2001 Volvo PGA Championship
Gary Emerson - Winner of 2004 Russian Open
Bradley Dredge - Winner of 2006 European Masters
Richard Finch - Winner of 2007 New Zealand Open and 2008 Irish Open
David Drysdale - Winner of 2004 Challenge Tour Grand Final and 2006 Peugeot Challenge
Garry Houston - Winner of 2008 Welsh PGA Championship
Gary continues to work with numerous leading PGA European Tour Pros in addition to an ever increasing number of Scotlands up and coming professionals and amateur golfers.
In 2010, Gary took the decision to alter his schedule in order to develop Gary Nicol Golf Instruction, based at Kingsfield, in Linlithgow, Scotland. This means he will still travel to a dozen or so PGA European Tour events but will be spending the remainder of his time helping golfers of all standards at Kingsfield through his entertaining and educational golf instruction programmes.
“Here at Kingsfield, I believe we have one of the finest quality golf learning and practicefacilities in the UK. Not only do we have a fantastic range with fully equipped V1 swing analysis studios, we have excellent putting greens, the fantastic short game scoring zone and a first class 9 hole golf course, complete with USGA specification greens. I cannot think of a better destination to come and improve every aspect of your golf game.”
“Over the years, having both coached and learned from some of Europeʼs most successful Tour Pros, I understand that each and every one of us has their own way of doing things. My style of coaching allows my students to gain a better understanding of their golf swing. Ultimately, through teaching you new SKILLS AND DRILLS, my aim is to help YOU become better at what YOU do naturally and become a consistently better and much happier golfer as a result.”
